Star Citizen offers several types of ship insurance, which determine how long your ship is covered in the event of destruction or loss. The most common types you’ll see are LTI (Lifetime Insurance), IAE insurance, and time-limited insurance (XX months/years).
Important: Insurance is intended to fully matter after the game officially releases. During the current Alpha phase, insurance differences generally do not have a practical impact on gameplay.
Lifetime Insurance (LTI)
LTI = Lifetime Insurance
- Provides permanent insurance for the life of the game
- Considered the most desirable insurance type
- Eliminates the need to ever worry about renewing hull insurance
- Typically harder to obtain and often limited to specific pledges or promotions
With LTI, your ship will always have insurance coverage against destruction, without ongoing renewal costs.
IAE Insurance (10-Year Insurance)
IAE insurance is a special long-term insurance, usually 10 years, offered on certain ships during the Intergalactic Aerospace Expo (IAE) anniversary event.
- Provides 10 years of insurance coverage
- Available only on select ships and promotions
- Second only to LTI in terms of long-term coverage
XX-Month / XX-Year Insurance (Standard Insurance)
These insurance types are listed with a specific duration, such as:
- 6 months insurance
- 24 months insurance
- 120 months insurance, etc.
Key points:
- Coverage lasts only for the stated time period
- Once expired (after full release), it is expected to require in-game renewal
- Common on most standard ship pledges
Notes / Tips
- LTI = Lifetime coverage, most sought after
- IAE = Long-term (usually 10-year) special event insurance
- XX months/years = Standard, time-limited insurance
- Insurance does not meaningfully matter during Alpha, and is intended to become relevant after full release
Understanding these differences can help you choose ships and packages that best fit your long-term plans in the Star Citizen universe.
