Overview
Star Citizen includes an insurance system designed to help players recover ships after loss. Lifetime Insurance (LTI) is a highly valued type of insurance because it provides permanent coverage for eligible ships, offering long-term protection and convenience.
What Is Lifetime Insurance (LTI)?
In Star Citizen, insurance is intended to work similarly to real-world insurance: if your ship is destroyed or stolen, insurance helps you receive a replacement.
LTI (Lifetime Insurance) means your ship’s hull and its stock (default) equipment can be replaced indefinitely, without any ongoing insurance renewal cost.
How LTI Differs from Standard Insurance
Duration
LTI: Permanent (for the life of the game)
Standard insurance: Time-limited (e.g., 3 months, 6 months, or longer), and must be renewed when it expires
Cost
LTI: No recurring in-game cost to keep coverage active
Standard insurance: Requires in-game credits to renew over time
Coverage
Both LTI and standard insurance generally cover:
The ship hull
Stock equipment
However, upgrades and cargo may require additional coverage depending on how insurance systems are implemented and balanced.
Why LTI Matters
Peace of Mind
LTI reduces the worry of losing a ship permanently due to piracy, combat, accidents, or other hazards—your ship remains protected without needing renewal management.
Long-Term Value
Over extended play, repeated renewals of standard insurance can add up. LTI eliminates that recurring expense, making it a cost-efficient option for long-term players.
Higher Perceived Community Value
Historically, ships with LTI have often been viewed as more desirable within the community because the insurance benefit is permanent (community market value may vary over time).
Protecting Rare or Limited Ships
For players with rare or limited ships, LTI adds reassurance that those ships can always be recovered under the insurance system.
Notes / Tips
Lifetime Insurance (LTI) provides long-term security and convenience that standard insurance can’t match. While it may not be required to enjoy the game, many players value it for the peace of mind, economic efficiency, and added confidence when flying prized ships. As Star Citizen is still in active development, always keep an eye on official updates from Cloud Imperium Games, as insurance mechanics may evolve.
